Dining in Style in the middle of the bush

with Orient-Express camps in Botswana

Let’s face it, you have travelled long distances, taken many flights in planes that get smaller and smaller, until you eventually arrive in the ultimate wilderness of Botswana, the miraculous place where a delta meets a desert, where you will have one of the world’s best wildlife experiences. Bearing this in mind we have tweaked a daily programme to make sure that guests who have come all this way, will have the opportunity to spend as much time as they wish out in the bush with the animals.

Not being constrained by camp schedules means that if you are having a fascinating morning game-drive (or mokoro trip) and you are far too excited to go back to the lodge, just to have brunch, well you don’t have to - your breakfast served in the bush will be substantial and your brunch will be available back at the camp from 10h30 until 13h30. The same will apply for your evening drive, come home when you want to, as dinner will be served until late.

Your day will still begin at sunrise with a gentle voice calling “knock knock” outside your tent (as there is no door on which to knock) and a delivery of hot tea and coffee and biscuits. Soon after you set off before the sun gets too high in the sky. This is the best time in the day for animal spotting as this is when they are still foraging and hunting, when the air is still thin (better for picking up sounds) and the light is still low.  After an hour or two you might mistake a rumbling tum for a strange animal - but all is in hand, as your guide stops the car in what seems like the middle of nowhere and lays out a very satisfying spread of breakfast goodies.

(By the way, for those who feel the need to lie in, you will still be able to do a bit of leisurely animal spotting from the perfect position of your tent and enjoy an unhurried a la carte breakfast in the dining room at a time that suits you.)

Whilst on your morning game-viewing activity, there is no particular time that you need to return to the camp. If you are following a lion or a hyena that is tracking its mid-morning snack, you can do so until the snack is had or gets away. And when you do return home, the a la carte brunch will be available from 10h30 – 13h30.

Funny thing about the bush, all this fresh air, nature and hungry animals, seems to expand your appetite. You will be delighted to find a wonderful display of traditional breakfast delights as well as salads, meat and fish dishes.

Then there is that wonderfully delicious time in-between the morning and afternoon game drives, time to eat or swim or read or sleep or just do nothing and soak up the out-of-this-world view and be pleasantly surprised by just how many animals you can see from the camp.

Before you set off for the evening drive, a light afternoon tea will be served.

Once again, whilst on your evening game drive, your guide will find the most exquisite (and animal-safe) spot to stop the car/boat/walk to watch the sun sink below the horizon and the sky turn that special African sunset-red. Next thing you know, you have your favourite sundowner in hand and tasty canapés on the table.

Much later, once you have returned to the camp and had a relaxing shower, enjoy dinner served under the stars, maybe at Fish Eagle Bar or even private dining in the bird hide or on the deck of your tent. Supper includes a superb selection of soups, salads, exotic meat dishes and vegetarian creations.

End an idyllic day perfectly; sitting around a roaring campfire with a myriad of stars overhead, an Amarula and some wild African tales.
