Wildlife

Botswana is the old Africa, one of the world’s last great wilderness areas. A place of harsh contrasts and untamed beauty, parched expanses of sand, savannah and teeming game.

Here the mighty Okavango, one of the major rivers of Africa, flows south from Angola, not into the sea but straight into The Sand Of The Kalahari Desert, to create that ecological marvel – the legendary Okavango Delta.

An ever–changing labyrinth of crystal clear channels, lake, lagoons and swamps. 18 000 km2 of blue water, dense papyrus reed beds and tree-covered islands. An oasis for wildlife and for lovers of authentic Africa.

In Botswana there are 164 species of mammals, 550 species of birds, 80 species of fish, 157 species of reptiles and 38 species of amphibians. The majority of these species occur within the Okavango Delta region.

This list of animals, birds, reptiles and insects which feature in this section will, we hope, encourage you to keep a record of what you see during your stay. Our ranger is very knowledgeable and will be able to help you with the identification of trees, birds and animals.
